I’m James Haining, a freelance Lighting Programmer and Production Electrician, based in Liverpool and working across the UK and Ireland.
I’m a multi-skilled lighting technician with extensive experience in West End, regional and touring theatre, as well as large-scale live events. I work closely with lighting designers and production teams to realise, maintain and protect creative intent throughout pre-production, fit-up, technical rehearsals and long-running shows.
I have expert-level knowledge of ETC EOS family consoles, am highly skilled with GrandMA3, and have advanced experience in lighting networks, touring infrastructure and show documentation. I also regularly design, build and install bespoke practical lighting and LED solutions, helping bridge the gap between design intent and technical delivery.
For over ten years I was Technical Manager and Chief LX at Liverpool’s Royal Court, one of the UK’s busiest producing houses, delivering more than 80 productions. Alongside this, my freelance work includes commercial theatre, national tours and arena productions as a Lighting Programmer, Production Electrician and Associate Lighting Designer.
My wider technical background includes sound and video systems, QLab, projectors and venue-level technical management, supporting strong inter-departmental communication and efficient problem-solving during complex technical periods.
